GM Human Resources: Obama Style

There is an old adage: Beware what you wish for, you might get it. Well, the hope-wreathed wishes for change are coming to fruition as the President takes one unprecedented step after another. Over the weekend, he ordered the departure of General Motors' Chairman and CEO, Rick Wagoner, ostensibly as part of the effort to save the century-old automaker. There needed to be a shake-up at the top of GM, no question, but the real issue is the fact that the President did this at all.

Automaker Bailout Part 2: It is Raining Money!

At the risk of telling you “I told you so,” well, I told you so! The original Big Three Dog and Pony Show before Congress netted the Detroit automakers billions of taxpayer dollars, changed the company jet from an executive perk to a major PR liability and later on led to the same effect on the humble thank you note. Other than that, not much seems to have changed. After all, if things were different, two of the Big Three wouldn’t be back for another helping of bailout pie.

A New World Order We Can Live With

The Prime Minister of Australia has come out with it, a call for a New World Order in which Democratic Socialism would be the norm since, according to the PM, the free market simply cannot be trusted. Maybe he is right, and a new world order really is necessary, but is it the democratic socialism that he is calling for? Not a chance.

Sometimes a Nice Thank-you is The Wrong Way To Go

Mom always said that if you get something nice, you should always say “Thank you.” That is good advice in general and we at the Bottom Line heartily endorse it. However, Chrysler has just learned that this axiom does not apply to the receipt of tax payer bailout money. Who knew?

Small Business Bailout

The Final Word on Economic Stimulus

Einstein, who is purported to have been a pretty sharp guy, defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result each time. It seems that the experiment in Keynesian economics our government has been engaged in is about to prove Einstein’s theory, or are we looking at something entirely different?

Retail Stimulus

There has been a lot of talk of how the trillions in bailout money should go to Main Street now that Wall Street has wasted its cut and the automakers are about to take their piece. Now, with a proposal from the National Retail Federation, that might be a step closer to happening, but will it work?

Should Government be Run Like a Business?

The Congress just gave itself a pay raise. For you and me, pay raises are predicated on things like a good financial picture and personal achievement; you know, meeting goals, raising the bar, exceeding expectations—all that good, positive stuff—but pay raises for our legislators don’t work that way. Maybe it is time they should.

$350 Billion in the Hole and Record Unemployment: Time for Something Different

When we were being sold on bailing out the financial sector, we were told that it was necessary to save jobs, homes, investments, businesses. Well, the first half of the initial $700 billion has been spent, stocks have been trending down and the unemployment rate is higher now than it has been in decades. Now a congressman from Texas has a radical idea: Take the other $350 billion and use it to finance a two-month tax holiday for all Americans. Now that’s what I call progressive!
