The Roosevelt New Deal was an answer to the same kind of financial crisis that we are facing today. It resulted in massive government intervention in the economy, confiscatory taxation and is generally acknowledged to be the reason the crisis lasted as long as it did. Now we are in a crisis with eerie echoes of the great depression and we have the choice of two presidential candidates: one that promises government austerity and one that promises massive spending.
