Search engine optimization is a deep an on going process for a website. I have a few free and basic tips that I recommend every small business to do for their site.
- Google Local. Google is the world's largest search engine and continues to gain market share every day. Creating a profile here will get you listed in a few weeks and will provide driving directions and information about your business to people searching for your products or services. It just takes a few minutes to get started. Create your Google Local profile.
- Add your company name, address and phone number to every page. The search engines can recognize address, phone numbers and location meta data when they are looking at your website. Having this information will tell them where you are located and help them better their results for people searching for your services in your area.
- Examine all of your page titles. Search engines use your page title in order to determine your websites
relevance to the search terms that searchers are looking for. For
example, titles like "Home Page" or "Welcome" do not describe anything
useful to the search engines or potential customers looking for your
page. Search engines also use the headings in the content of your website to make similar distinctions. By optimizing the keywords you want to be found for in the content of the website, you are more likely to be found under these terms.
- Submit to free search directories.
- Add META Tags.
META Tags were once the single most important rating factor among
search engines. Their importance has fallen significantly, but they
should still be included on every page of your website. The META
Description tag is still used by search engines as the text shown in
the search results.
