We strongly recommend putting all company rules and policies in writing, preferably in your employee handbook. Doing so will help to set the right expectations for your employees and settle disputes that may arise later. By having en employee handbook and spelling out everything from working hours and dress code to payment practices and benefits, you will make sure all employees are treated fairly and held to the same standards. In her recent article “Perfecting Policy” for America’s Best Magazine, Sarah Schlingman says: “having set guidelines can also help to minimize the risk of an employment-related lawsuit.” Indeed, according to the Institute of Corporate Productivity, 43% of organizations have face harassment charges, discrimination charges, or litigation from their employees. Having an employee handbook, written with the help of an attorney or HR specialist, is a great way to be proactive about personnel issues.
